The world that humans live in is a fragile place. In the past, humanity has done whatever it pleased without a second thought on the effect those actions would have on the environment. However, an increased awareness of environmental issues has changed this attitude, and created an entirely new industry.
Environmental science is an interdisciplinary study which focuses on developing ways to lessen humanity's impact on the planet. For example, environmental scientists do a lot of work with alternative energy, researching new forms of energy, and trying to improve the efficiency of current forms. One increasingly important line of work has been the development of wind and solar energy, as energy tycoons like T. Boone Pickens continue to push for more alternative energy sources. Other environmental scientists study the effects of pollution, deforestation and species extinction, among other things.
If you would like to pursue a career in environmental science, you first need to obtain a degree. Due to the rising demand for alternative energy and environmentally friendly construction, most universities and colleges now offer degrees in environmental science. The interdisciplinary nature of this degree lends itself to a variety of course options. Students typically choose from a number of different biology, chemistry, ecology and engineering courses, depending on their interests. Most of these courses include both a lecture and a laboratory. In lecture students learn about the basics of environmental science, before moving on to more specialized topics. In the accompanying laboratories, student get to demonstrate their understanding of the environmental concepts by working on real world problems. Although this is the traditional route by which students earn environmental science degrees, it is not the only option. If you are unable to commute to campus, or have other obligations that make attending day time classes difficult, an online program is better suited to your needs. Online programs offer the same level of education as traditional colleges, but with a greater level of freedom and flexibility.
