Healthcare has been a rapidly growing job sector for many years. Consequently, demand in the medical transcription field has been increasing as well. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, medical transcription services are growing at a 15% annual rate. Although the job requires a unique skill set, it provides workers with flexible hours, with many medical transcriptionists working from home. The job of a medical transcriptionist consists of taking voice recordings, from doctors or other health care professionals, and converting them to a text format. The job has seen rapid evolutionary changes since its advent in the 1960s. What used to be done on manual typewriters and bulky tape machines is now handled by word processors, digital voice recordings and, occasionally, speech recognition software. Medical transcriptionists must have good to excellent typing skills. They also must have a good memory and excellent grammar and communication skills. Transcriptions are often needed in a timely matter and the job can demand working on a tight deadline.
There are a variety of online courses that prepare a student for a career in medical transcription. Although some countries require as much as two years specialized training to become a medical transcriptionist, the United States has no mandated requirement for certification. Individuals can earn the title of Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT) by passing a test administered by the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity, the major credentialing agency for transcriptionists. Graduates of transcription schools may earn the entry level title of Registered Medical Transcriptionist (RMT) title. Quality online courses can can be completed part time, consisting of about 500-600 hours of coursework. On-campus technical schools and community colleges typically prepare an entry level transcriptionist in about a year.
Medical transcription jobs are increasingly popular with individuals that prefer a flexible work schedule or need to spend time at home with their families. Whether a student chooses to attend a community college, trade school or complete a course online, it is a smart choice to pursue a degree in healthcare with an emphasis in medical transcription.
